REMEMBER HOW RESPECTFUL WE WERE

REMEMBER HOW RESPECTFUL WE WERE.....

Remember when we were young...when we were still students, and we would see our classmate's or our friend's parents...we would say "Hi Uncle or Hi Auntie!", some of us would even bow our heads or, at the very least, wave and smile!

Even now when I meet with my friend's parents, I would treat them as if they were my parents....giving them all the respect and t

he care that they so richly deserve.

Remember when we would go to our classmate's or our friend's house....and when we see their parents, we would immediately stand up and greet them, and we would even be courteous to their help...and then before we leave, we would say goodbye to their parents...because after all...they do own the house and we did disturb them somewhat......

So what happened to this generation?

I and my wife Dinah, are very close to our kids....we bring them to school and we fetch them from school.....

Some of Mary Nicole's and Niccolo's classmates do greet me and some even spend time talking to me...and I always have a sincere smile and a ready wave for these friends of my kids....I appreciate that they respect me, or at least recognize my presence.....
but, sad to say, a lot of them don't do that......

Most of them disregard me, even if I am talking to my kid and they are just there beside my kid....
Some of them don't even look at me inside the elevator, when I am with my kid and they know that I am the father...and these are my kids' classmates....

These are kids who are studying at an expensive, private, Chinese and Catholic School.....it's painful to hear and realize...but what a waste of money!

Is it inherent to this new generation....or is it our fault, the parent's fault?....
Have we been so obsessed with making sure that our kids get good grades and become rich in the future...that we have forgotten to teach them the basics...to be respectful....to be honest....to be decent?

I cringe at the prospect of a future filled with these kids becoming rich.....because if they are this arrogant and disrespectful now...
now that they have not proven anything yet...imagine how swollen their heads will be when they do become rich.....they may just step on people!

But.....but.....there is always hope.....

Lizzie's classmates...all of them at the age of 6 or 7...
almost all of them greet me and talk to me...they call me....."Charlize's Dad"...and I tell them to call me "Uncle Jonathan" or "Uncle Doc" to those who may have a hard time with "Jonathan." ...
They wave when they see me.....then they talk to me and tell me about anything at all...and I am always flattered that they spend time talking to me....and I always give importance to whatever it is they tell me....because they have shown more respect than the students twice their age.

I hope my kids have not embarrassed me, by not greeting their friend's parents....because I would be sorely disappointed if they did, even more disappointed than if they had gotten a low grade in school.

There are several things infinitely more important than grades, money and power.....if as adults and as parents, we don't know that yet...then truly, the problem of this generation and the future generations, is us!
